Wāhine in Forestry Scholarships

The Wāhine in Forestry Scholarship is a one-off $5000 grant awarded to support a female student enrolling for the first time in full-time study at the University of Canterbury’s School of Forestry in 2026. This scholarship aims to grow the representation, visibility, and impact of wahine in the forestry industry.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must:

  • Intend to enrol full-time in a forestry qualification at the University of Canterbury in 2026.

Selection Criteria

The selection panel will consider:

  • The relevance of the qualification and the applicant’s intended pathway into the forestry industry.
  • Academic achievement and/or potential.
  • Commitment to the forestry sector and alignment with its values.
  • Demonstrated character, leadership potential, and community involvement.
  • Potential to contribute to the forestry sector, with particular regard to increasing gender representation.

Shortlisted applicants may be invited to an interview as part of the assessment process.

Award Details

  • One scholarship of $5000 will be awarded.
  • The scholarship is a one-off payment made directly to the recipient to support study-related costs.
  • The scholarship will be awarded subject to confirmation of full-time enrolment at the University of Canterbury School of Forestry in 2026.

Scholarship Conditions

  1. The selection panel is not obliged to award the scholarship if no applicant is deemed suitable.
  2. The recipient may be required to participate in promotional activities, such as photo opportunities or quotes for communications, to support future Wahine in Forestry initiatives.
  3. Recipients must provide a short written report (approx. 300-500 words) at the end of their first year of study, outlining their progress and experience in the programme.
  4. The scholarship may be revoked if:
    (a) They withdraw from study or change to a non-forestry qualification during the academic year;
    (b) They fail to uphold reasonable academic progress or professional conduct.
  5. The Wāhine in Forestry organisers reserve the right to vary these regulations at any time.
